Blog Numero Uno

Greetings fellow ITS'ers and bloggers.  Tonight is my very first experience posting a blog.  I'm quite anxious and excited to see how this whole experience will go.

I think that once I get the hang of blogging, I'll enjoy using it both professionally and perhaps a separate one for my personal use?  I like how you can customize your own settings/layout/etc. to make it fit the individual.  How cool is it to have another way to communicate with students/parents?

I'm curious as to whether any of my students blog, of follow one on a regular basis?

  1. Brian, I could actually see you using a blog at some point for personal use. I do like the idea of using a blog for communicating with parents and students. As I'm sure all of LCPS teachers do, the fourth grade team at my school keeps a website to communicate. We post homework, important annoucements, newsletters, etc. But based on comments and statements from parents and students, I can tell that most don't even use the website. Maybe a blog would be more fun and easier to use? Not that the website is hard, but maybe they would like the idea of it better, and could post questions. Wow...I wrote a bunch.

    Nice work, Brian!

  2. I find that some students use the LCPS websites, but not as many as I would expect. I too am interested to find out how many of our students blog/follow blogs. Blogging is new to me.

  3. Hi Brian!

I am positive that any student over the age of 12 is at least familiar with blogs. Most of them use them on Myspace and Facebook. I understand that your students are significantly younger than the ones I work with, but the principle is the same. I've talked to several younger students (10-12ish) that have played with them in conjunction with online games. Anyway, I would offer one word of caution with personal blogs - your students will find it. So, you are going to want to be careful what you post on it. Granted, my students are in college, but they found me on facebook and myspace within a week of me joining. And they read what I post. You just have to be careful what you want to be public knowledge and what you want to be private information. In addition, my biggest problem with my personal blog is that my friends comment on it. I can control what I post, but I can't control what they post. And they might not bee as careful about what they say (not that there are any skeletons in the closet, but there are just some things you don't want your students to know). I don't mean to sound like I'm telling anyone not to have a blog - I'm not. I'm just letting you know what I've experienced.

  5. I would think that many of your students are familiar with blogs and may even have had experience using one. I would think there would be tons of ways you can use it with your grade... any ideas how to use it with kindergarten ?
